Can you suggest any good books for it and any weekend course available for it in delhi

    • RAU'S IAS -  December 6, 2011 - 5:43 am

      Dear Pankaj,

The pattern of Civil Services (P) Examination has changed from 2011. Now, there are no optional subjects in Preliminary. There are two compulsory papers, 1) General Studies and 2) Aptitude (both objective type)

Syllabus and pattern of Prelims Exam – http://www.rauias.com/schemeofexam.php

Weekend Program in General Studies – http://www.rauias.com/weeken_batch.php

          Dear Vishal,

We do not prepare answer keys of state level exams. We only provide answer key and complete analysis of Civil Services exam conducted by UPSC.

    sir
    plz could u tell
m the syllabus of hcs pre exam…………
    thanks

    • RAU'S IAS -  December 8, 2011 - 7:49 am

      Dear Jitender,

Syllabus and pattern of HCS exam will be more or less the same as Civil Services syllabus and pattern. However, at the Preliminary level, Haryana, I guess, still has an optional subject (instead of Aptitude paper)

For exact details you will have to consult the Brochure for HCS (Ex. Br.) and Other Allied Services Examination’ (Edition 2011) which can be obtained from the office of HPSC by making a payment of Rs 100 at the counter and Rs 150 by post (Through Indian postal orders /Bank draft of a scheduled bank payable to Secretary, Haryana Public Service Commission at Panchkula) and also instructions for candidates supplied with the application form for Preliminary exam.

      Regards,
      Rau’s IAS

  3. Meenakshi -  December 7, 2011 - 11:47 am

Could you please help me with the following regarding following information regarding Haryana PSC 2012 exam -
    1. Exam dates as in time table.
    2. Number of optionals: is it three ?
    3. How to prepare for this while staring to prepare for UPSC: I am preparing public administration right now and have plans to prepare sociology only after prelims.
    4. Is English Literature, an okay option, in terms of scoring capacity, as my third optional.
    5. Are there any test series for Hcs too?
I truly appreciate your counselling. Please post a reply to my email address, if possible.
    Regards

    • RAU'S IAS -  December 9, 2011 - 7:09 am

      Dear Meenakshi,

1 and 2) For exact details you will have to consult the Brochure for HCS (Ex.

      3) More or less, the exact strategy can be devised after getting to know the exact dates of exam (which will be available in the detailed Brochure – I do not have that brochure yet). Most probably, HCS still has an optional subject in preliminary exam (and not aptitude paper). So, you should choose to keep Pub Ad as an optional in the prelims and while studying Pub Ad also focus on it from an objective test point of view. I am sure you are preparing for GS (Mains cum prelims) side by side.

      4) You should keep Eng lit only if you are Eng Lit grad. If not, then pick subjects which will be complimentary with GS.

      5) See, there will be no test series or classroom coaching available for PCS exams in particular. Test series or classroom coaching is available for Civil Services Exam. Because the pattern followed by PCS exams is more or less the same as CSE, therefore, if you properly prepare for CSE you stand prepared for all PCS exams.

      Dear Rajesh,

  5. tarun -  December 10, 2011 - 7:31 am

which is the easiest subject as optional considering – 1. marks optained in them. 2. their length of syllabus. 3. need to charm or not a lot 4 . even though the subject is more difficult but high scoring and good for a fresher.

    thanks

    • RAU'S IAS -  December 12, 2011 - 7:20 am

      Dear Tarun,

After strategically shortlisting optional subjects, you must evaluate your interest in them. This is because, the same optional subject may work very well for one and not so well for another (this depends on interest level and aptitude of the candidate).

Consider subjects: Public Administration, Political Science, Geography, Sociology, History and Psychology.

      1) Pub Ad – has concise syllabus – relatively easier to learn – helps in ‘Indian Polity’ section of General Studies – is a good choice
      2) Sociology (study of society) – is an interesting subject – will help you with ‘issues of social Relevance’ section of General Studies and in the Essay paper
      3) Psychology (study of human behaviour) – conceptual and interesting subject but does not have any syllabus overlap with General Studies.
      4) Geography – conceptual subject – opted by many science background students – syllabus is lengthy but it helps a lot in General Studies preparation.
      5) Hitory – is lengthy, however, it is a non-dynamic subject (straight forward subject where in information never changes) and helps enormously in General Studies

    • RAU'S IAS -  December 12, 2011 - 7:09 am

      Dear Kamal,

      1) In Haryana PSC exam, you get to choose any one Law subject from the following three (this was as per last years notification):
      a. Criminal Law or
      b. Civil Law or

If you consider yourself good at Law then I will recommend it. For study material – http://www.rauias.com/postalguidance.php

      2) For exact details (including examination dates) you will have to consult the Brochure for HCS (Ex. I want to know about the HCS preliminary exam pattern.I know that it is an objective test, but I want to know that on which subjects will the objective questions will be asked,I mean to say whether there will be aptitude in the preliminary exam or there will be some optional subject.

    • RAU'S IAS -  December 15, 2011 - 7:37 am

      Dear Prakar,

Haryana PSC (HCS exam) has 2 objective type papers in Prelims, (1) General Studies (2) Optional subject (yes, HCS still has an optional subject and not the Aptitude paper which was introduced in UPSC’s Civil Services Exam in 2011).

I am chemical engineer, working as class -1 officer in centre govt(approx.10 hrs job), but wish to go for Haryana psc.
(1)Which subjects I choose for HPSC prelim, I am interested in History, but blank right now and afraid of its lengthy sylalbus(considering time remaining for exams)
(2)Is there any test series and study material for GS and history
    please guide me.
    Thanks

    • RAU'S IAS -  December 15, 2011 - 8:01 am

      Dear Anil,

      1) Public Administration is shorter in syllabus than History. If time is a constraint, then you may opt for Pub Ad in the Prelims and keep History as your other optional (along with Pub Ad as first) for the Mains.

      2) We have test series in General Studies (Paper I) and Aptitude/CSAT (Paper II) (not any optional subject). Information regarding the test series will be available in the month of January.

      Regards,
      Rau’s IAS

      Dear Sanjeev,

Syllabus and pattern of HCS exam will be more or less the same as Civil Services syllabus and pattern. However, at the Preliminary level, Haryana has an optional subject (instead of Aptitude paper).

Regarding optional subjects, I suggest you read our blog and related Q&As on ‘subject selection’ from http://www.rausias.com/blog/?p=69

We would not be able to provide you previous years question papers of Haryana Public Service Commission. I do not think that question papers will be available anywhere on internet either. You may either check for them from HPSC’s website or purchase them from market.

    Respected Sir
I am a B.Tech(computer science) graduate and working as Software Engg. , I am interested in preparing for HCS exam, I don’t see any subject related to my main stream(computer Sc.). Out of all 19 optional subjects available for prelim, I found Geography, Indian History, Public Ad. and Political Sc. interesting which i can read as a fresher but not sure which one will be best option for me, which can be covered maximum in short period of time, also please suggest me which subject among these four will be having maximum/minimum facts and figures.

    Thanks in Advance!

    • RAU'S IAS -  December 26, 2011 - 10:31 am

      Dear Gaurav,

      1) Yes, there is no subject related to computers in Civil Services or Haryana State Services Exam.

      2) However, the subjects that interest you are also strategically good subjects (as they have syllabus overlap with General Studies – the compulsory paper). Pick the ones which interest you the most.

      # History is lengthy, however, it is a non-dynamic subject (straight forward subject where in information never changes) and helps in General Studies.
      # Geography is a conceptual subject which is opted by many science background students. Syllabus is lengthy but it helps in General Studies preparation.
      # Pub Ad – has concise syllabus – is relatively easier to learn – helps in ‘Indian Polity’ section of General Studies
      # Political Science is similar in nature to Public Ad but is slightly lengthier than Pub Ad. The extra syllabus (which relates to India’s international relations with rest of the world) is also interesting.

      Regards,
      Rau’s IAS

  19. SOURAV KUMAR -  December 15, 2011 - 6:34 pm

    SIR
PLEASE HELP ME REGARDING THE SELECTION OF OPTIONAL IN HPSC(PRE)-I HAVE OPTED FOR ECONOMICS AS MY OPTIONAL,IA IT A GOOD SUBJECT TO CARRY ON FURTHER.SCALING SYSTEM IS NOT THERE IN HPSC(PRE) EXAM-DOES IT AFFECT MY SELECTION OF ECONOMICS AS MY OPTIONAL?

    • RAU'S IAS -  December 26, 2011 - 10:24 am

      Dear Sourav,

Are you an Economics (H) graduate?

Generally, Economics is considered a tough subject and opted by only Eco (H) graduates. I suggest that you try to solve some previous years’ question papers in it to test your competency in the subject and check comfort level. If you feel confident, then go for it!! (do not worry about the scaling system – select a subject which interests you and then the subject will work for you).

For more on optional subjects, read our blog and related Q&As on ‘selecting optionals’ – http://www.rausias.com/blog/?p=69.

    • RAU'S IAS -  December 27, 2011 - 5:35 am

      Dear Yogesh,

      1. Rather than referring to multiple books, I suggest you refer to study material in History for Civil Services Exam. This is because all state exams follow more or less the same syllabus (in a subject) as in civil services. You may refer to our study material in History http://www.rauias.com/postal_preexam.php. For General Awareness you can refer to ‘Haryana State’ published by National Book Trust (NBT)

      2. Syllabus of General Studies (Prelims) would be more or less:
      # Current events of national and international importance
      # History of India and Indian National Movement
      # Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World (including General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization).
      # Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
      # Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
      # General Science
      # General Mental Ability

      3. If you consider yourself good in Hindi literature, then yes go ahead!! Sociology and History are strategically good optional subjects as well.

      All the best,
      Rau’s IAS

Haryana PSC (HCS exam) has 2 objective type papers in Prelims, (1) General Studies (2) Optional subject (yes, HCS still has an optional subject and not the Aptitude paper which was introduced in UPSC’s Civil Services Exam in 2011).

      Study Material
      1. For General Awareness refer to ‘Haryana State’ published by National Book Trust (NBT) and Manorama.
      2. For the rest of the syllabus, you must refer to study material in General Studies (Prelims) and the respective optional subject – http://www.rauias.com/postal_preexam.php

    sir
i want to ask u that i am a commerce graduate . i want to appear for hcs exam . what optional subject should i choose whether it be economics or commerce. i am good in economics too. or should i go for some other subjeeect. and tell me the courseware for the general studies as well as the optional subject.

    • RAU'S IAS -  December 27, 2011 - 6:24 am

      Dear Rahul,

      1. Generally, Economics as an optional subject you be opted by Economics (H) graduates. The sections/portions of economics that you must have studied as part of your Commerce subject will help you with the Economics portion of General studies paper. I suggest that if you are keen on choosing Economics, you must go through its syllabus and 10 years question papers to check its length and difficulty level. If you feel confident, only then go for it. Otherwise, there are alternatives available (Public Ad, Geography, Sociology, etc) which are scoring, successful, not difficult to pick up and also help in General Studies.

      2. If you want to take advantage of your background, i suggest you consider Commerce as an optional subject as well. Check the syllabus of Commerce from – http://www.rauias.com/commerce-accountancy.php

      About HCS
      3. Syllabus of General Studies is more or less the same as the syllabus of GS (Prelims) in UPSC’s Civil Services Exam:
      # Current events of national, international importance and state specific
      # History of India and Indian National Movement
      # Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.
      # Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
      # Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
      # General Science
      # General Mental Ability

      4. For more and exact details you will have to consult the Brochure for HCS (Ex.

    • RAU'S IAS -  January 24, 2012 - 8:57 am

      Dear Sandeep,

Whether coaching or not (In GS or optional subject) is completely your decision. Yes, coaching certainly plays a vital role. It helps in providing the right orientation for the students and save valuable time in the process. They also provide information on such themes which are not easily accessible to the students. The most important role is the utility of “just in time” management and help the reorganisation of information hitherto gathered by the students (i.e. “just in case” collection of information). Also, it provides a learning and testing environment for the students which acts like a pace maker and keeps students working hard.

Not that you cannot succeed by self study alone. Essentially, even after coaching if a student does not self study then there is no way he/she can get success. Yes, certainly with no help, you’ll have to study by yourself, remain motivated, prepare a time table to keep yourself on track and test yourself periodically.

      About books
See, NCERT books are a starting point which help you refresh your basics and lay foundation for targeted study towards the exam. Instead of referring to different books, you must refer to a study material prepared primarily for civil services and in accordance with upsc’s pattern and syllabus. Study material is prepared with the objective of helping students clear/crack the civil services exam. It is prepared in accordance with the civil services syllabus and upsc’s pattern of question papers. Our material is comprehensive and exhaustive. If followed properly, it would prepare you thoroughly for the exam. Also, a list of reference books (including NCERT books ranging from class 7th- 12th) will be provided with our study material in case you want to refer to more resources.

The scheme of examination is as mentioned at http://hpsc.gov.in/Advertisement/AdvertisementHCS%20_ExBr_2011.pdf under point (4).

Additional requirements for DSP post are also mentioned here under points (2g) and (3).

hello sir, sir i have filled up the form of hcs this year,. i have taken psycology as optional subject in prelims. sir which subject would be better to be studied with psycology in mains? thanks sir.

    • RAU'S IAS -  February 12, 2012 - 8:49 am

      Dear Preeti,

It is not that a particular subject will be better to be studied alongside Psychology. Psychology as it is does not have any syllabus overlap with the contents of General Studies (which is the compulsory paper). However, yes, if you like analytical and conceptual subjects (which is probably why you have chosen Psychology) then Geography or Pub Ad/Political Science would be good options.

For more on optional subjects you must read – http://www.rausias.com/blog/?p=69.

      Dear Priya,

There is actually no trend in state services examinations. Many state exams are not even held annually. Therefore, I would not be able to advice you on the tentative date of Haryana State Exam.

We will have to wait for an official notice from the Haryana State itself. The notice should be out soon.

Also, we would not be able to provide you with previous years question papers of Haryana Public Service Commission. It does not seem that they are available anywhere on internet either. You should try for them at a book shop that sells books for competitive exams.

Further, For Haryana state related General Awareness/Current Affairs/Culture, etc you can refer to ‘Haryana State’ published by National Book Trust (NBT) and Manorama.

    • RAU'S IAS -  February 21, 2012 - 7:09 am

      Dear Kapil,

There is actually no trend in state services examinations. Many state exams are not even held annually. Therefore, I would not be able to advice you on the tentative date of Haryana State Exam.

We will have to wait for an official notice from the Haryana State itself. The notice should be out soon.

      All the best,

    • RAU'S IAS -  February 28, 2012 - 5:33 am

      Dear Deepak,

Syllabus and pattern of HCS exam is more or less the same as Civil Services’s syllabus and pattern. However, at the Preliminary level, Haryana still has:
      1) General Studies (compulsory)
      2) Optional subject (optional)

      whereas,

      Civil Services has:
      1) General Studies (compulsory)
      2) Aptitude (compulsory)

You can read about the syllabus and pattern of Civil Services Exam from – http://www.rauias.com/planofexam.php and following pages.

For exact details you will have to consult the Brochure for HCS (Ex. Br.) and Other Allied Services Examination’ (Edition 2011) which can be obtained from the office of HPSC by making a payment of Rs 100 at the counter and Rs 150 by post (Through Indian postal orders /Bank draft of a scheduled bank payable to Secretary, Haryana Public Service Commission at Panchkula) and also instructions for candidates supplied with the application form for Preliminary exam.

    thank you sir

    • RAU'S IAS -  April 3, 2012 - 5:59 am

      Dear Anuj,

We do not provide coaching separately for any state exam.

We coach for Civil Services Examination. In fact, all state exams broadly follow the same pattern and syllabus as Civil Services Exam. They only differ in the Current Affairs and General Knowledge portion to the extent that all states include general knowledge related to their state as well (whereas in Civil Services Exam general awareness is tested on a macro basis).

For acquiring general awareness you can go through particular ‘State GK books’.

New batch for Civil Services Exam will start from 1st June 2012 – http://www.rauias.com/june.php

    • RAU'S IAS -  April 11, 2012 - 12:49 pm

      Dear Anu,

You have not mentioned about the level of Maths that you teach. You can go through the syllabus and previous years question papers in Mathematics to understand how comfortable you will be with the level of Maths asked in UPSC exam. And then explore further.

Further, to understand the right track and follow the right direction in choosing optional subjects (or keeping Maths as one of the optional subject), I suggest you go through our blog entries and related Q&As from http://www.rausias.com/blog/?cat=55.

    Respected Sir,

I am a Chartered Accountant and commerce graduate (hons.). Pls suggest me which subjects shall I choose for Haryana Civil Services Exam 2013….(candidate need to choose 3 optional subjects for main exam)??. I didn’t have gone through Economics in deep/conceptually during my graduation , however I had developed aptitude & liking for Eco while I was pursuing CFA (USA).
I have read some of your posts, sir u have mentioned that Public Admin has relatively shorter syllabus and also easier one. So that may be my 2nd optional subject after accountancy.
Pls suggest for 3rd subject me shall I go for Eco (I heard its very tough) or some other subject…? And which subject…in terms of benefiting me in qualifying the overall examination…?
How to prepare for complusory papers-English and Hindi of Main HCS exam….?

Sir Pls advise..It will be great help for me. Thanks Sir..!

    Regards,
    Anil

    • RAU'S IAS -  April 13, 2012 - 8:53 am

      Dear Anil,

      1) Have you gone through our blog on ‘how to select optional subjects?’ Go through this and related Q&As. Most of your queries will get resolved.

      2) Yes Economics will be tough. You have easier optional available in Geography, Sociology, Pub Ad, History, Psychology. Check your interest and comfort level among these optionals and pick the one which interests you the most.

to figure your interest you could go through NCERT books in:

      • Civics: 6th – 10th standard (for Pub Ad)
      • Geography: 6th – 12th standard
      • Sociology: 11th and 12th standard
      • History: 6th – 12th standard

      All the best,

    Please reply this time.

    • RAU'S IAS -  April 19, 2012 - 8:56 am

      Dear Ankita,

      1) Yes, it is possible to manage studies alongside job. At least there is no reason for you to leave job instantly. Initiate your preparation first and only when it becomes imperative for you to dedicate all your time towards the exam should you think about leaving job.

      2) For help on selecting optional subjects, I suggest you read our blog on ‘optional subject selection‘ along with related Q&As – http://www.rausias.com/blog/?p=69

      3) Prelims in Haryana still consists of objective type papers in GS and 1 optional subject.

      4) In the Mains (written) exam:

      Compulsory Papers
      (i) English & English Essay – 150 marks
(ii) Hindi & Hindi Essay – 150 marks
(iii) General knowledge – 150 marks (This paper is intended to test the candidates knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day observation and experience in their scientist aspect as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject. The paper will also include questions of historical, geographical and economic importance with special reference to Haryana).

      Optional Papers
2 optional subjects to be selected from the list of available optionals. Broadly, the optional subjects should be: Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce and Accountancy, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Indian History, Law, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Political Science and International Relations, Psychology, Pubic Administration, Sociology, Zoology, English Literature, Hindi Literature, Punjabi Literature.

(For more and exact details you must go through the HCS Exam brochure/notification.)

5 & 6) Study Material – Our material is comprehensive and exhaustive. If followed properly, it would prepare you thoroughly for the exam. Also, a list of reference books (including NCERT books ranging from class 7th- 12th) will be provided with our study material in case you want to refer to more resources. The only difference will be in the coverage of general awareness. For example, General Studies paper of Haryana state exam will also quiz you on general awareness of Haryana as a state. For state related General Awareness/Current Affairs/Culture, etc you must refer to ‘Haryana State’ book published by National Book Trust (NBT) and Manorama.

      7) There is no such fixed quantity of time that can be prescribed. Lay more focus on quality rather than quantity of time. Prepare a time schedule that will help you cover the entire syllabus including revision and self evaluation time. Stick to that syllabus and study regularly. maybe 4-6 hours in the beginning on a daily basis and 8-12 hours at peak time.

      Rau’s IAS

    • RAU'S IAS -  May 9, 2012 - 8:43 am

      See Sandeep,

It is not a particular combination of optional subjects which is more beneficial than the others. You should pick such optional subjects which (a) have syllabus overlap with the syllabus of general studies, (b) have been producing good success rate and (c) interest you.

Read our blog on ‘optional subject selection‘ and related Q&As to know how to select optionals.

On a general note, you may consider Public Ad, Sociology, Geography.

We provide study material in all of these optional subjects and more. Details of our study material (fee, procedure to purchase study material, etc) are contained here.

Detailed and exact syllabus of all optional subjects will be available in it. On a general note, the syllabus of optional subjects at state level exam is the same as UPSC’s Civil Services Exam.

We provide study material in all General Studies, Law and Public Administration according to UPSC’s syllabus. That material is sufficient for state level exams as well. You can collect the study material from our office in Delhi or write to us with fee DD and we’ll send the material to you by post. For details of study material please click here.

    • RAU'S IAS -  May 24, 2012 - 6:53 am

      Dear sonali,

I am mentioning the subjects which are strategically good. You need to evaluate your interest amongst them.

Public Administration, Sociology, Geography, Political Science, History.

How you can also figure out your interest amongst them is to start your preparation in General Studies. You’ll get to read something on each of these topics as part of General Studies.

      Regards,

    Sir,

I’m a computer engineer working as a an independent consultant overseas. I want to return to India, and prepare for State Civil Service Exams (HCS in particular). I went through the subject list and shortlisted the following : Geography; Public Administration; Electrical Engineering. Could you please provide some guidance regarding the choices.

    Regards,

    Randeep Panwar

    • RAU'S IAS -  July 20, 2012 - 1:32 pm

      Dear Randeep,

Usually all engineering and science subjects have a higher difficulty level compared to other optional subjects and therefore not many students from science background prefer to keep science subjects.

Geography and Public Administration on the other hand are opted by majority aspirants because of their relevance in the General Studies paper and higher success rate. They are also not technical papers and level of difficulty is lower compared to other subjects. Geography could, however, be lengthy.

  110. sonali -  August 11, 2012 - 11:18 am

please suggest me the famous books by which i can prepare for the prelims exam upsc

    • RAU'S IAS -  August 16, 2012 - 12:04 pm

      Dear Sonali,

Refer to Rau’s study material in conjunction with NCERT books, newspapers and magazines:
Our study material is prepared primarily with the objective of helping students clear/crack the civil services exam.

      NCERT books:
The basic guideline at the start of the preparations for both Preliminary and Main Examination is to read NCERT books on related subjects. There is no substitute for them. One should refrain in the beginning from reading guidebooks, as they load you with information, but with very little concept.

      NCERT Books: Social Studies
      • Civics: 6th – 10th standard
      • Political Science: 11th and 12th standard
      • Geography: 6th – 12th standard
      • Sociology: 11th and 12th standard
      • History: 6th – 12th standard
      • Economics: 9th – 12th standard (latest edition)

      NCERT Books: General Science
      • Physics, Chemistry, Biology: 9th and 10th Standards

For Current Affairs and General Knowledge (make a habit of reading newspapers and magazines regularly and analytically. The events of National and International which effect human lives at large are important from General Studies point of view)
      • The Hindu, Times of India, Frontline, The Economist, Pratiyogita Darpan

      Regards,
      Rau’s IAS
